Thoughts from the Heart: Why I Call My Firm a Boutique Bookkeeping Service
You know how sometimes you say something without even realizing you were thinking it? Just me? Well, it happened this morning, and it was surprisingly enlightening. The word that slipped out? Boutique.
I recently joined a new networking group of fellow accounting professionals. When asked to describe my company, Bluebird Business Solutions, I referred to it as a “boutique bookkeeping firm.” While I do provide bookkeeping services, my work goes beyond that. Why did my brain land on “boutique”? It all connects to jeans. Yep, jeans.
The Connection to Jeans
I've been embracing my "mom bod" and, inspired by my 11-year-old fashionista, I’m leveling up my wardrobe. While I’m not keen on the baggy sweatshirts that are all the rage, I definitely need a more flattering pair of jeans. So, I started browsing online - and now my feed is filled with ads from various boutiques.
When I think about shopping at a boutique, I envision:
Custom sizing
Personalized recommendations
Unique selections that aren’t commoditized
After my slip of the tongue, curiosity got the best of me (thanks, dictionary habit!). I looked up “boutique bookkeeping firm” to see if my interpretation fit.
What Is a Boutique Bookkeeping Firm?
According to my research, a boutique bookkeeping firm is a smaller, specialized financial service provider that offers:
Personalized, expert advice
Focus on specific industries or needs
Strategic, advisory approaches rather than just compliance
In essence, it’s about relationships, strategy, and proactive thinking—not just recording transactions. I aim to bring humanity back into accounting and make strategic partnerships accessible for small business owners and entrepreneurs. That’s why I created Bluebird.
A Personal Touch
I know what it’s like to wear all the hats - operations, HR, accounting, IT, executive assistant... If something needs doing, you’re often the one who has to do it. I’ve learned the hard way about missed opportunities. For example, don’t ask me about the tax savings we could have achieved if we’d switched to an S-Corp sooner.
But here’s the thing: If you work with me, you can rest assured I’m already thinking about those things for you. You know the saying, “We don’t know what we don’t know”? Part of my “boutiqueness” (which should totally be a word) is using my expertise to help business owners consider what they might not even realize they need to think about.
Let’s Connect!
My goal is to educate and employ proactive solutions tailored to each client, meeting you where you are while keeping the bigger picture in mind.
I’m not your typical accountant - I actually like people! Numbers are my jam, but I care more about the relationships. I want to know where you’re going, not just where you’ve been - whether that’s about your kids or your last vacation. And if my services aren’t the right fit, I likely know someone who can help.
No jeans are one-size-fits-all, so why should your accounting and business solutions be? If this resonates, let’s chat!
